FF | Digital Shaping - Capturing buildings three-dimensionally

Field of research - change of perspective © iPE

Within the scope of this research field, the application of 3D scanning in the building sector is being investigated. The focus here is on the digital recording of building structures and its fields of application in the development, construction and operation of buildings.

In a full-day event, students in small groups have the opportunity to digitally capture areas on the RWTH campus using a 3D scanner. With the help of technologies such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, highly precise 3D as-built images are produced that can be used to create digital twins.

In a subsequent scientific paper, the students examine the various fields of application of a 3D scan and analyse which potentials will arise for the future in digital building recording.
