Opportunities of structural change - New perspectives for NRWCopyright: IPE
In the summer of 2020, the Department of Real Estate Development will be holding a 5-day alumni training event on the opportunities of structural change in NRW at RWTH Aachen University.
North Rhine-Westphalia has been undergoing profound structural change since the gradual phase-out of hard coal mining began. While the Ruhr area has managed to retain the identity-forming past of a mining region despite the challenges this has brought, the open-cast mining region in the Rhenish mining area is still at the beginning of this process. However, the recently decided phase-out of lignite mining is not only a major challenge for the mining regions in North Rhine-Westphalia. That is why we want to discuss with leading experts, alumni and students of the RWTH Aachen University the upcoming transformation process from an industrial region to a sustainable economic region of international importance for research and industry.
The focus will be on current issues concerning our future working life and leisure time behaviour as well as the optimal use of newly available revitalisation areas. In the context of urban and regional planning, it is also important to identify changing requirements for our living standards and to integrate them into higher-level planning processes at an early stage.
Within the framework of interdisciplinary training, we therefore want to enter into an open and intensive exchange on the following global challenges:
1. resources and sustainability
2. open space, landscape and agriculture
3. society and urbanity
4. mobility and infrastructure
5. buildings, accommodation and energy
6. digitisation and technological innovation.
The event is aimed at all interested experts, alumni and students who want to think ahead and shape the potential and foundations for future-oriented developments in NRW today. The event is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
We are looking forward to future-oriented impulses!
